I created dancePROOF aiming for it to be the blog [and community] that questions the norm with thought provoking and revolutionary ideas. This has always been a passion of mine, and in writing down my thoughts and ideas about sex and sexuality, love and relationships, society and beliefs, spirituality and religion, and self development and identity I hope I can inspire you to question your ‘norm’ and as a consequence do something positive/better with your life and time.
Why do we do the things we do? Why do we follow the rules we follow? What would happen if we did things differently? Would we be smarter? Would we be healthier? Would we be happier?
I don’t know about you, but ever since I was a little tiny thing (I think we call them boys) I constantly had these questions running through my mind… constantly! To answer them I did the usual thing and turned to philosophy, psychology, sociology, sexology, personal development, etc. Through studying all these topics I learned something (actually two thing). I learned that other, and exponentially wiser, people also had had these questions and in the process of living their lives actually provided answers to some of them. But, I also learned that most of them used jargon that is mostly misunderstood by my generation (Gen-Y). I understood that like most educational things, most of this education will fall onto deaf-ears not because the information sucks, but because it’s boring.
So I started dancePROOF to help fix that.
Why can I not talk about philosophy, psychology, and personal development with a sense of humor and a provocative edge? Why can I not use ‘jargon’ that my generation understands and relates with? Why can I not build a blog/community where through a mixing of education and fun I hopefully actually better the world and people in the process? Why can I not personally test social norms that don’t make sense (like working at a job you hate) and write about it?
Well, to my astonishment, I can. And so can you; follow me and learn something along the way.
In the process of building up dancePROOF I occasionally talked about my adventures in lifestyle design. My original intention was to keep my lifestyle design “adventures” separate from dancePROOF because one focuses on helping people and the other focuses on me and makes me sound… egotistical. But, as people continued to be [mysteriously] intrigued by my ‘adventures’ I realized that the underlying theme of improving oneself and others does in fact apply to them.
I realized that by living my life the best way possible, exploring as many provocative things as possible, showing how I personally test the norm, and generally live life differently I can help others by setting myself up as a role model of sorts, and maybe provide that little push they need to change their life for the better.
Plus, it’s fun to talk about them
.
…But, why the name dancePROOF? Well, a great passion of mine is dancing. I view dancing as life lived to the fullest. I view dancing as that moment where you are fully alive, in the moment, and happy. Wanting to provide “proof” (get if?) as to how people can live a better life, be fully alive, and be happy I naturally named it dancePROOF. Then I got to thinking about other words that include ‘proof’, such as bulletproof, and figured that proof could also stand for “to withstand”; and isn’t the notion of you being able to “withstand” life and it’s challenges (it being a dance) a good one?
When you’re dancing you’re not supposed to rush, hoping to be finished with it as fast a humanly possible.
The point of dancing is to go along with the music, enjoying the ups and downs, the changes in tempo, staying in sync with the intricate parts of the music, and feeling the emotion that the music conveys in you.
Once you’re done dancing, and you look back at your performance, you realize that the whole point to the dance was to connect with people (the audience and/or your partner), to perform it as best as you could by putting your heart and soul into it, and to just have fun.
YOU”RE NOT DANCING FOR THE TROPHY.
That’s it for the “About” page. Catch new thought provoking posts (and the occasional rant) here on dancePROOF EVERY WEEK.
